Farm friends group costume: 12 roles for 2 to 10 people

What this theme is

Farm Friends is the theme on this site with the widest age range per role, which is why it survives a family group where a four-year-old and a forty-year-old are both in costume. Every animal is a color, a pair of ears, and one prop; the Farmer, the Barn, and the Corn are people in ordinary clothes with a hat. It costs $10-25 a person, works for two people or ten, and is one of only two themes here listed for trunk-or-treat — the walking pace is gentle and nothing in it startles anyone. Bring a basket, not a pitchfork, if there are small children on the route.

Best for

Group size: 2-10, with twelve roles — a two-person farm still works because the Farmer plus any animal is a complete picture.

Scene: family, trunk-or-treat. Designed for mixed ages and gentle, walkable movement.

Budget: $10-25 per person, $50-125 for five, $100-250 for ten.

Prep time: One evening. Felt cutouts are the slow part, so cut them while the theme is being picked.

Repeat roles

Twelve roles against a two-to-ten range means a small group picks a subset and a large group still has no duplicates. If your group goes past ten, add a second Chicken or a second Cow rather than a second Farmer; two Farmers in overalls read as twins, which is funny but not what the group was going for. The Barn is the one role never to double, because a red barn with white trim is a building, and two buildings make the group look like a village.

Shopping checklist

Owned basics

overalls, flannel or plaid shirt, white clothes, pink outfit, grey outfit, cream or beige layers, green tee, jeans, a red tunic, boots, yellow tights.

Buy or borrow

straw hat, burlap hat, feather boa, animal ear headbands, a snout, a curly pig tail, felt for the cow spots, a red comb, horns and a beard, face paint for the mud.

Props

an egg basket, a wicker basket, a toy steering wheel, a stick with a carrot on the end instead of a pitchfork if there are small kids, a tin can, a bone plush, a butter plush, a handful of hay or straw in a bag.

Budget notes

Per person $10-25, with the animals costing more than the people. The efficient split is one purchased piece for the two or three animal roles that carry the theme — the Cow's felt spots and the Chicken's feather boa — and overalls, flannel, and a straw hat for everyone else. Cotton and felt move the group from a closet to a costume without a costume garment. Group total for five is $50-125 and for ten $100-250. Price checked: Oct 2026. Retailer pages are final for current pricing, sizing, and delivery dates.

If someone joins late or drops out

A latecomer takes the Cow or the Sheep: a white or cream outfit plus felt spots or an ear headband, both of which the group can hand over on the night. If someone drops out, drop the same animal — nobody has been promoted and nothing needs rebuilding. Only fix it if the missing person was the Farmer, since overalls and the straw hat are what say "farm" in a photograph; in that case promote the Barn into overalls and let the barn keep its red tunic off.

Sources & methodology

  • Prices: per-person ranges are checked by our editorial team against retailer listings (price checked: Oct 2026). The retailer's page is always the final source for live price, stock, sizing, and delivery dates.
  • How picks are made: every theme in our dataset is tagged by headcount range, role count, difficulty, and per-person budget. Pages on this site filter that dataset — we do not scrape live retailer feeds, and commission never decides the ranking.

FAQ

Is a farm costume good for kids and adults together?

Yes, and it is the strongest family pick here — animals are one color plus ears plus a prop, and the roles scale from a toddler's overalls to an adult's. It is listed for family and trunk-or-treat scenes.

How many people do you need for a farm group costume?

Two works — a Farmer and any animal is a complete scene. Four or five is the sweet spot for a family, and ten is still inside the range with no duplicate roles.

Is it scary enough for trunk-or-treat?

It is deliberately not, which makes it easier on young children. The Scarecrow is the only role anyone might call spooky, and it is a plaid shirt and a burlap hat.
