Classic monsters group costume: 10 roles for 2 to 10 people

What this theme is

Classic Monsters is the one theme in this pack where the makeup is doing real work, and it is included here as a deliberate contrast: it is the most expensive at $20-40 a person and the most prep-heavy, and it is the theme groups pick when they want the photographs to look like an actual poster. Every role also has a makeup-free version, because half of these characters read as themselves through silhouette alone — a white dress, a lab coat, a flannel shirt and a wolf mask. Ten roles across two to ten people means a couple can do it, which is unusual for a monster theme and useful when the group is smaller than planned.

Best for

Group size: 2-10, the widest minimum here at two. Two monsters is a complete pair, not a compromise.

Scene: college party, family. Deliberately not on the office list — heavy makeup and masks are harder to wear all day.

Budget: $20-40 per person, $100-200 for five, $200-400 for ten.

Prep time: Two evenings if you are doing green face paint; one if you lean on the makeup-free versions.

Repeat roles

Ten roles for a two-to-ten range means no repeats are needed inside the range. Beyond ten, a second Vampire in a cape is the least offensive duplicate, but give them a different vest color so the group does not read as a mirror. Never duplicate the Bride of Frankenstein or the Mummy — both are a complete silhouette, and a second one in the same photograph steals the frame.

Budget notes

Per person $20-40, and face paint plus a good wig is most of it. The budget-aware version of this theme is the makeup-free one: the Mummy in wrapped strips, the Invisible Man in a robe and sunglasses, the Ghost Host in a sheet, and the Vampire in a cape and vest all read without a drop of paint, which drops a group of five well under the $100-200 ceiling. Spend the money on one mask or one wig rather than four costume garments. Price checked: Oct 2026. Retailer pages are final for current pricing, sizing, and delivery dates.

If someone joins late or drops out

The Vampire is the late-joiner slot: a cape and a shirt, with fangs from a party bag if nothing better turns up. If someone drops out, leave a gap — a group of monsters is not expected to fill every category, and nine roles still looks like a full cast. The role to promote is the Ghost Host, because a group with no sheet in it has lost its one element that photographs instantly; if the sheet is available, hand it to whoever is holding the candelabra.

Sources & methodology

  • Prices: per-person ranges are checked by our editorial team against retailer listings (price checked: Oct 2026). The retailer's page is always the final source for live price, stock, sizing, and delivery dates.
  • How picks are made: every theme in our dataset is tagged by headcount range, role count, difficulty, and per-person budget. Pages on this site filter that dataset — we do not scrape live retailer feeds, and commission never decides the ranking.

FAQ

How many people do you need for a classic monsters group costume?

Two works and is the practical minimum here — a Vampire and a Mummy is a complete pairing. Five gives you a cast, and ten fills every role without a duplicate.

Can I do classic monsters without face paint?

Yes, and it is the cheaper route. The Mummy, the Invisible Man, the Ghost Host, and the Vampire all read from silhouette and costume alone, so a group can skip paint entirely and still photograph as a cast.

Is this good for a workplace party?

Not the best fit — it is listed for college and family scenes rather than office, because full face paint and a mask are hard to wear through a working day. For a workplace party, pick a role-based theme from this pack instead.
